Key takeaways

  • Your actual working arrangements determine the tax treatment; choosing a package does not change your employment status.
  • Keep records for each income source and check the official guidance linked to the questions below.
  • Agree the accounts, returns and advisory work you need before accepting a written fixed-fee quote.

Which accountancy support fits your income?

Start with how you are paid. Different income sources can need different accounts, returns and expense checks.

Sound familiar?

Problems we fix for dentists

  • "Payments on account as a self-employed associate catch me out."
  • "I don't understand my NHS Pension superannuation."
  • "We've had a UDA clawback."
  • "Lab bills make my profit hard to track."
  • "I'm not sure whether my cosmetic dentistry needs VAT."
  • "I want to buy, incorporate or sell a practice."

What it's costing you

Leaving it unfixed is rarely free

Overpaid tax
Unclaimed expenses and wrong tax codes mean paying more than you owe, year after year.
HMRC penalties and interest
Late returns attract automatic penalties, plus interest on tax paid late.
Lost evenings
Hours spent on forms, invoices and spreadsheets after a long shift.

General examples — your position depends on your own figures.

How we solve it

What we actually do for you

Associate package

Self Assessment, superannuation and a tax reserve plan.

Practice accounts

Accounts that show UDA income, lab costs and true margins.

Incorporation review

Whether a limited company actually helps, with the figures.

Acquisition and exit planning

Goodwill, finance and tax planned before you sign.

How we help

01

Associate dentist tax

Reconcile income after practice deductions and review lab fees, professional costs and other allowable expenditure.

02

Practice accounts

Accounts for sole traders, partnerships and companies, with payroll and cash-flow reporting quoted to match your practice.

03

Dental VAT reviews

Separate qualifying healthcare from taxable supplies and consider the impact on VAT registration and recovery.

04

New and squat practices

Plan equipment, premises, fit-out and working capital before committing to a new practice.

What to know before you decide

Associate or owner: start with the right accounts

An associate’s income records and agreement are different from a practice owner’s accounts. Employment status follows the facts, not simply the word associate. Owners also need to understand payroll, finance agreements, partner or director transactions and the timing of NHS and private receipts. We identify the records needed for your actual arrangement before preparing returns.

Dental care and cosmetics need different VAT checks

VAT exemption depends on qualifying healthcare supplied by the appropriate registered professional and its primary purpose. A treatment described as cosmetic is not decided by its label alone; purpose and evidence matter. Taxable retail or non-clinical services can affect registration and input VAT recovery. Keep clinical justification separate from financial records and avoid blanket assumptions about every treatment.

  • Pension tax work agreed separately where needed

Discuss this package

Employment status is determined by the facts, not the package you choose. PAYE, umbrella and partnership arrangements may also apply. A limited company does not override IR35 or off-payroll rules, and not every employed clinician needs a tax return.

Overpaid tax?

Tax refund support for dentists

We review tax codes, eligible professional expenses and overpaid tax, then prepare a claim where you qualify. A refund is not guaranteed; HMRC decides the claim.

£249 + VAT

For refunds up to £5,000, our fee is £249 plus VAT. For refunds above £5,000, add 5% of only the amount above £5,000 to the £249 fee. VAT applies to the total professional fee.

Example: a £6,000 refund means £249 + £50 = £299 plus VAT.

Professional fee, excluding VAT

£249

Ask about a tax refund

This illustrates the fee only, not whether you qualify or how much HMRC will refund. We agree the claim scope and payment terms before work starts.

Your questions, answered

Can you help an associate dentist with MTD?
Yes. We assess qualifying income and the applicable start date, then agree digital records and quarterly-update responsibilities.
Is a new dental practice covered by a standard package?
Not necessarily. Fit-out, financing, staffing and acquisition work can require a tailored quote.
Do you offer cheap dental accounting?
We focus on a clear scope and fixed fee, not a lowest-price claim. Compare what is included, especially VAT and pension work.
