What to know before you decide
When does an NHS doctor need Self Assessment?
A PAYE salary alone does not automatically require a tax return. Untaxed private or locum income, partnership profit and some pension tax charges can create reporting obligations. Start with the HMRC criteria rather than assuming every doctor must file. We map each source of income and identify what belongs on a return, what has already been taxed and where further records are needed.
Self Assessment Tax Returns for Doctors & Healthcare ProfessionalsGP drawings are not the same as taxable profit
A partner can owe tax on their allocated profit even when the practice has retained cash or drawings were lower. Accounts, capital balances and pension certificates therefore need to be considered together. A cash-flow forecast should include tax payments on account and any change in partnership share, not simply annualise the money reaching your bank.
