Accountants for beauty therapists

Self-employed beauty therapists juggle treatment income, product sales, room rent and often several workplaces. We file your returns, claim the right expenses and keep you ready for Making Tax Digital — for a fixed fee agreed up front.

What can a self-employed beauty therapist claim on tax?

Allowable expenses commonly include room or chair rent, products and consumables, equipment, professional insurance, training that maintains existing skills, and business mileage between clients or salons. Costs must be wholly and exclusively for the business; we confirm each item before claiming it.

Fixed fees, specialist healthcare accountants, and every HMRC and NHS Pensions deadline handled.

Medical.Accountants by ACCOTAX, ICAEW/ACCA-regulated chartered accountants, London, serving clients across the UK. Over 5,000 clients served.

Key takeaways

  • Treatment income and retail product sales are both taxable — record them separately.
  • The VAT threshold is £90,000 of taxable turnover in any rolling 12 months.
  • MTD quarterly updates start from April 2026 where qualifying income is over £50,000.

Problems we fix for allied health professionals and therapists

  • "I'm going self-employed for the first time."
  • "I have both NHS and private income."
  • "I don't know whether my services are VAT exempt."
  • "When should I go limited?"
  • "Can I claim my regulator fees?"
  • "Making Tax Digital starts from April 2026."

What it's costing you

Leaving it unfixed is rarely free

Overpaid tax
Unclaimed expenses and wrong tax codes mean paying more than you owe, year after year.
HMRC penalties and interest
Late returns attract automatic penalties, plus interest on tax paid late.
Lost evenings
Hours spent on forms, invoices and spreadsheets after a long shift.

General examples — your position depends on your own figures.

What to know before you decide

Treatments, products and courses: three income streams

Treatment fees, retail product sales and training income can be taxed differently, particularly once VAT is in the picture. Separating them in your records from day one makes the year-end simple.

Mobile and home-based working

Mobile therapists can usually claim business mileage between clients; home-based therapists can claim a share of household costs for the room used for treatments. We calculate the claim that fits how you actually work.

Cosmetic or medical? Why it matters for VAT

If you move into advanced or injectable treatments, the VAT treatment can change: purely cosmetic work is generally standard-rated, while genuine medical care can be exempt. Get the position checked before your turnover nears the threshold.

VAT Registration & Returns for Doctors & Healthcare Professionals

Your questions answered

Are my services exempt or standard-rated?

Medical care provided by registered health professionals is generally VAT exempt if the primary purpose is protecting health. Purely cosmetic procedures and medicolegal reports are typically standard-rated at the prevailing rate. You must monitor your taxable turnover against the £90,000 registration threshold. Determining the correct liability requires a detailed review of your specific services.

What is partial exemption?

Partial exemption applies when a healthcare business makes both VAT-exempt and taxable supplies. You cannot usually reclaim all input VAT if you have exempt income. A specific calculation determines how much VAT on overheads is recoverable. This is a common requirement for GPs and consultants with mixed income streams.

What happens if I registered late?

Failure to register for VAT when your taxable turnover exceeds £90,000 may result in financial penalties. HMRC may also charge interest on the VAT that should have been paid from the effective date of registration. You will be liable for the VAT on past sales regardless of whether you charged it. Early disclosure often helps in mitigating these penalties.

Discuss this package

Employment status is determined by the facts, not the package you choose. PAYE, umbrella and partnership arrangements may also apply. A limited company does not override IR35 or off-payroll rules, and not every employed clinician needs a tax return.

Overpaid tax?

Tax refund support for allied health professionals

We review tax codes, eligible professional expenses and overpaid tax, then prepare a claim where you qualify. A refund is not guaranteed; HMRC decides the claim.

£249 + VAT

For refunds up to £5,000, our fee is £249 plus VAT. For refunds above £5,000, add 5% of only the amount above £5,000 to the £249 fee. VAT applies to the total professional fee.

Example: a £6,000 refund means £249 + £50 = £299 plus VAT.

Professional fee, excluding VAT

Ask about a tax refund

This illustrates the fee only, not whether you qualify or how much HMRC will refund. We agree the claim scope and payment terms before work starts.

Your questions, answered

I'm part-employed, part self-employed — what do I file?
Both: your employer deducts PAYE, and you file Self Assessment for your self-employed income. We make sure expenses land on the right side.
Is training an allowable expense?
Training that maintains or updates skills you already have usually is; training that gives you an entirely new skill usually is not. We check course by course.
Do I need to register for VAT?
Only once taxable turnover passes £90,000 in a rolling 12 months — but if you offer both cosmetic and medical treatments, which sales count can differ, so ask us to check.
