What to know before you decide
Paying for cover personally
If you pay for private medical insurance out of your own pocket, the premium is a personal cost. It is not deductible against employment income or self-employed profits, because it is not incurred wholly and exclusively for the business.
Paying through your limited company
A company can normally claim corporation tax relief on premiums it pays for employees and directors. The trade-off: the person covered is taxed on the premium as a benefit in kind at their marginal rate, reported on form P11D by 6 July after the tax year, and the company pays Class 1A National Insurance on the value. Whether this beats paying personally depends on your tax rates — we run both numbers.

There are narrow exceptions: for example, certain medical treatment arranged by an employer so an employee can return to work can be exempt, and cover for work abroad is treated differently. These depend on the precise facts, so take advice before assuming an exemption applies.
