What to know before you decide
Why IR35 comes first for locums
An NHS trust must issue a Status Determination Statement for every off-payroll engagement — the small-company exemption does not apply to public bodies. If you work through your own company, the determination decides how that income is taxed, so check it before you plan drawings or dividends.
IR35 Reviews for Doctors & Healthcare ProfessionalsYour first tax bill as a locum
Newly self-employed locums are often caught out by payments on account: on 31 January you pay the balancing amount for the year just ended plus, usually, half of the same amount again towards the current year, with the second half due on 31 July. We work out a monthly set-aside so January holds no surprises.
Keeping the NHS pension right
Each trust or practice needs the correct locum forms for your pensionable pay to be recorded. We prepare and track locum A/B and Type 2 forms alongside your accounts, so pension records and tax returns agree with each other.
